Chants against Saudi Arabia as Iran marks Jerusalem Day

Lillian Steele | 24 June, 2017, 01:39

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians took to the streets on Friday in an annual show of solidarity with Palestinians, marking Al-Quds Day with chants against Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

Iran held major anti-Israel rallies across the country Friday, with protesters chanting "Death to Israel" and condemning the occupation of Palestinian land.

In Tehran, the rallies were organized in ten routes ending at the University of Tehran, where worshippers attended the weekly Friday congregation.

Similarly, President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday, "In order to curb Zionism and terrorism in the region, the unity of the Islamic world must be reinforced".

On June 18, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps launched missiles onto Islamic State (IS, ISIS, ISIL, Daesh) terrorist group positions in Syria, killing some 60 terrorists, including some of their ringleaders.

Iran has sworn the destruction of the Jewish state, and backs militant groups with similar ideologies such as the Gaza Strip's Hamas and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Demonstrators chanted "Death to Israel, Death to America,", carrying banners reading "Israel should be wiped off the map" while people were shown burning the Israeli flag.

"We are here to express our hatred against Saudi Arabia, Israel and America", said Zahedi, 57.

Parliament speaker Ali Larijani was also scheduled to address crowds before midday prayers.

The country's nuclear and ballistic missile programs have always been a point of contention between Tehran and Washington, and are behind American sanctions against Iran.

Earlier this month, Palestinians marked the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War, which saw Israel occupy the West Bank, East Jerusalem al-Quds, the Gaza Strip and part of Syria's Golan Heights.

Also for Jerusalem Day, Iranian authorities unveiled a large panel at Palestine Square in central Tehran, counting down "the days left until the destruction of Israel".

That day, Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said a world without violence "is a world free from the Zionist regime" and called Israel the "root cause of all problems, violences and insecurities in the Muslim world and the entire world".
