Chinese dog meat festival goes ahead in Yulin

Friend or food? China's'civil war over dogs Heartbreaking News: Yulin Will NOT Be Banning Dog Meat Sales at This Year's Festival

Activists said they received assistance from local police and discovered the driver did not have health certificate for the dogs, a legal requirement when transporting animals in China.

A notorious dog meat festival in China opened yesterday with butchers hacking up slabs of canine meat and cooks frying the flesh, despite rumours that there would be a ban this year.

The market also sells cow tongues, pork hocks and trotters besides selling poultry, tanks of fish and vegetables and fruits, including lychees.

"They can keep live dogs for two or three days without giving them food or water, but if they have to freeze them, then that sends up the costs for the stallholders, and they can't make a profit", he said, adding that he had been followed by plainclothes police since arriving in the city to monitor the event. This festival and others like it that celebrate the torture of dogs and cats is an abhorrent display of animal cruelty. Near the market, Xinhua reporters saw chained or caged dogs, while dog meat was hung in booths in the market. One photographer from AFP was asked to leave, and officers requested that all his photos of the market be deleted. It was given by a friend who had used it as a guard dog but no longer wanted it because "it would only wag its tail, it wouldn't bark anymore", Wu said. Their commitment to improving the lives of dogs and cats and ending the meat trades in China can not be doubted and we proudly stand with them in their efforts. "Dogs that are too fat don't taste good either". "It's people's own choice what they eat".

The rescue was led by the Humane Society International (HSI), which reported the truck was intercepted in Guangzhou, a southern Chinese city known as the largest hub for dog and cat meat consumption in the world.

It's not a popular event for animal rights activists.

"Despite the fact that there does not seem to be a ban on dog meat, the festival appears to be smaller this year, with fewer dogs losing their lives to this cruel industry", said Ms Irene Feng of Animals Asia.

Will activists get their wish and see it stopped?

"I know it is a local custom", the director, who identified herself only as Xiao, said, "but I hope our protests can push the local government to increase efforts to discourage the eating of dog meat". But locals disagreed that sales were down. Consumption of dog meat is not illegal in China. Some changed their "dog meat" signs to read "tasty meat" instead.

The bloody scenes of butchering dogs in the road have disappeared, and some stores and restaurants have covered the character "dog" on their lists or menus. Their aim is our aim - we want to end the dog meat trade in China.

"Business during the festival goes up about ninefold". "They just won't sell to people they don't know well".

Li says people wanting to take action to end the Yulin festival can send letters or emails to their country's Chinese ambassadors (in the USA, it's Cui Tiankai) urging the country to stop the dog meat trade as a whole, and noting that it's damaging to "China's reputation, reinforcing stereotypes about China, the Chinese people, and Chinese culture".

She added: "That can not be jeopardised by ill-advised behaviour during the Yulin festival".

In Chinese culture dog meat is said to be beneficial during the hot summer months.
