Cosby trial accuser thanks supporters for love, kindness

Wallace Pearson | 28 June, 2017, 05:14

It has become increasingly common for judges to keep juror names secret during high-profile trials, though not after the case has ended, said Paula Hannaford-Agor, who studies juries for the nonprofit National Center for State Courts.

A mistrial was declared Saturday after jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked.

The Toronto woman who Bill Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting thanked her supporters in the wake of the comic's mistrial over the weekend.

Countless women came forward against Cosby, saying that he also drugged and assaulted them.

Kevin R. Steele, the district attorney from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, has already said he will seek a new trial against Cosby.

Steele said some good things came out of the trial, most significantly, that Constand was able to face Cosby in court and tell her story. "We didn't even get a decision so that made me more sick".

He said the jurors were completely mum on what caused the mistrial on the bus ride back to the hotel near the Norristown courthouse.

On Tuesday, Judge Steven O'Neill will be asked at a hearing to release the jurors' names but the prosecutors are fighting to keep their identities closed for fear of a "publicity onslaught" and difficulty when choosing a jury for the retrial.

Bill Cosby exits the Montgomery County Courthouse after a mistrial in his sexual assault case in Norristown, Pa., Saturday, June 17, 2017.

"The key to retrying a case is to do it differently the second time, because the defense expects you to do it the same way", said Constand's lawyer, Dolores Troiani.

Tonight on Channel 11 News staring at 5, hear the arguments that swayed McCloskey against Cosby and why he's happy the case will be retried. One of the alternate jurors in Bill Cosby's sex assault case has gone public.

"As you can only imagine", Allison said, "I've got a lot to praise God for". It is not yet clear why jurors could not reach a verdict, or how close they came.

Still, legal experts say, it won't be impossible to find 12 people to sit in judgment of Cosby, who turns 80 next month. Many other women have claimed that Cosby assaulted them as well, with specifics ranging from inappropriate touching to rape, but the statute of limitations for many of these complaints has expired, meaning that the crime happened too long ago for the government to legally prosecute Cosby.

He said of the six alternate jurors: "I would say we would have voted to convict". Cosby faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 to 30 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

The jurors' decision not to ask to rehear the experts' testimony could be an indication that they accepted their opinions at face value or, conversely, that they were unimpressed. "'Probably' does not win criminal trials".
