Honda plant in Japan suspends operation after WannaCry virus attack

Ransomware cyberattack halts production at Honda plant in Saitama Honda Halts Production At Japan Car Plant — The Reason Is Shocking

Amidst global ransomware cyberattack, this time WannaCry has hit one of Japan's leading auto manufacturing company in the world, Honda.

CAR MAKER Honda was this week forced to halt production at its Japanese manufacturing plant after finding the WannaCry ransomware on its network.

Honda had to shut down one of its plants in Japan earlier this week due to WannaCry making its way into their networks in multiple regions including Japan, North America, Europe, and China. Honda temporarily ceased production at its Sayama plant located northwest of Tokyo.

Work at other plants was unaffected but Honda said it is checking its overseas operations for problems. "At this moment, there is no further impact confirmed, but we will continue to monitor the situation and take every step to further strengthen the security of our systems", the spokesman says. Australian authorities reported on June 22 that more than 50 traffic cameras were infected with WannaCry.

A month after the ransomware made headlines for locking down computers around the world, including the British healthcare system, WannaCry is back in the news as it forces a auto plant to shut down in Japan.

WannaCry is found lingering in the Honda network, is this the last we will hear of it?

The ransom demand from the attack was between $300 to $600, and the post noted there was code to "delete files" in the ransomware.

Honda wasn't the only automaker to fall prey to the ransomware. They had stopped production at plants in Japan, Britain, France, Romania and India. It is also a reminder that simple attacks such as phishing can build a foundation for a cyber catastrophy.

Information about the exploits had previously been hoarded by the U.S. National Security Agency but were leaked online in April by a mysterious hacking outfit known as Shadow Brokers and ultimately incorporated into WannaCry. The MalwareTech sinkhole was detecting about 2,000 active WannaCry infections on June 21.
