Tech stocks have led the S&P 500's 9.4 percent rally this year.

Amazon led technology stocks higher with its shares increasing 1.33% to US$1,000.96 following last week's announcement that it had agreed to buy Whole Foods.

"Investors were temporarily chased from the space but many companies in the sector offer growth which is hard to find in the market as a whole", said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia.

Thanks largely to the tech gains, the Nasdaq's 1.4% rise represented the index's biggest one-day point and percentage move since November 7; Apple jumped 2.9% in its biggest one-day advance since February, while Facebook gained 1.5% and Amazon added 0.8%.

Apple rose 2.9 per cent to US$146.34, providing the biggest boost to the S&P followed by JPMorgan Chase, which rose 2.2 per cent to US$88.07. Exxon Mobil and Travelers paced the declining minority, giving up 1% each.

The tech sector saw a substantial bounce Monday, with the S&P 500 information technology sector closing 1.66 percent higher for its best day of the year. The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC was up 58.87 points, or 0.96 percent, at 6,210.63.

France's CAC 40 added 0.9 percent to 5,310 while Germany's DAX rose 0.8 percent to 12,855. On the Nasdaq, 1,793 issues rose and 906 fell.

Bond prices fell, which sent yields higher.

Technology stocks were bouncing back from a rough week, with Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google-parent Alphabet all up about 1 percent in early trading. Bank of America gained 1.8 percent. As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, rose by 3.3 basis points to 2.190 percent. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.4 percent to 2,370.90. The two-year yield climbed to 1.35 percent from 1.31 percent, and the 30-year yield ticked up to 2.78 from 2.77 percent.

The FTSE 100 in London rose 0.8 percent as the United Kingdom opened negotiations to withdraw from the European Union.

The Dow Jones industrial average increased 72 points, or 0.3 percent, to 21,457.

S&P 500 e-minis were up 7 points, or 0.29 percent, with 111,788 contracts traded. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
