The comments published by the official Korean Central News Agency were North Korea's first reaction to Otto Warmbier's death in a USA hospital on Monday after it released him for what it called humanitarian reasons.

North Korea claims it is the "biggest victim" after sending an American college student imprisoned for over a year home in a coma, from which he never awoke.

A North Korean spokesman quoted by AFP news agency accused the United States of mounting a "smear campaign".

"We gave him the best treatment until we sent him back to the USA for humanitarian reasons considering his deteriorating health", North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement by its spokesperson that was released on June 23.

Doctors who examined Warmbier upon his arrival in the USA described his condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness", and indicated he suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause.

KCNA quoted an unnamed spokesman for the country's National Reconciliation Council as saying: "Our relevant agencies treat all criminals. thoroughly in accordance with domestic laws and global standards and Warmbier was not an exception".

Warmbier was charged with "hostile acts" towards the North and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor, but was released and medically evacuated 17 months later.

They say there was no evidence he suffered from botulism.

It claimed that his sudden death is a "mystery" to North Korea as his health indicators were "normal" when he was brought home.

The agency didn't provide further details on how Warmbier was treated under detention or what might have caused him to lapse into a coma. Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, a day after Warmbier died following his return from captivity in a coma.

The spokesman said Warmbier was provided proper medical treatment during his stay. It warned that such actions would force North Korea to become even stricter in its way of dealing with other U.S. nationals held in the country.

The United States pressed China to exert more economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea to help rein in its nuclear and missile programs during a round of high-level talks in Washington on Wednesday.

"Dettwyler also reportedly asked for "a few moments of thought" for all the other people who suffer at the hands of the North Korean regime - and are "not US citizens".

USA lawmakers are also calling for a response to Pyongyang.

North Korea is a rogue nation driven by paranoia and hatred.

The funeral service was held at Warmbier's alma mater, Wyoming High School.
