New Southern California wildfire grows to 125 acres

Jerome Frank | 27 June, 2017, 11:25

The Brian Head Fire continues to grow and has burned more than 27,700 acres, Friday, June 23, 2017 in Brian Head, Utah. The blaze was one of several burning in the U.S. West as extreme heat challenges firefighters.

Meanwhile, a wildfire surging out of control on California's Central Coast has forced about 250 people to evacuate from their homes.

Utah wildfire Incident Commander Tim Roide said in a statement that Sunday was "a good day for firefighters, who were able to have success securing areas of particular concern, including the many structures affected by the Brian Head Fire".

The blaze broke out late Monday afternoon and quickly grew to almost 1.5 square miles (200 hectares), the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.

Another California wildfire, sparked by a traffic accident on a remote stretch of highway 80 miles east of Los Angeles, has grown to almost two square miles (over 500 hectares) in just a few hours.

California Highway Patrol officers say the blaze was started by a truck that caught on fire after it was involved in an accident.

Two people were hospitalized in the solo-vehicle crash and subsequent auto fire that caused the wildfire on Monday afternoon.

Evacuations were issued for the area of Huer Huero Road to Highway 58, and a shelter for evacuees was set up at Santa Margarita Elementary School, according to Cal Fire.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Better weather conditions have limited the growth of a wildfire in Utah that has prompted the evacuation of 1,500 people from hundreds of homes and cabins, officials said Sunday night.

The Santa Clarita fire, which started on Sunday on the 14 Freeway after a vehicle rolled over onto dry brush, had burned 870 acres as of Monday, according to Christopher Craft, an official with the Santa Clarita fire department.

Authorities ordered more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) in preparation for winds and low humidity that could push fire growth north after calmer weather kept its growth in check over the weekend.
