Health officials say mosquitoes trapped in an area of central OH have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

According to Franklin County Public Health, the positive test came from the area of Norwich Township near Hilliard. Furthermore, officials report that two birds have tested positive for the virus in Shawnee county. Residents of Columbus should call 311. Fifty-one Oregonians were infected with the virus a year ago - all from travel-related exposure, the Statesman Journal reported.

The return of West Nile-positive mosquitoes is once again prompting reminders to wear loose, light-colored clothing and to use repellents containing DEET.

To reduce the likelihood of infection, avoid mosquitoes, particularly between dusk and dawn when they are most active. No human cases have been reported.

Lastly, officials stressed that West Nile is only spread through bites from an infected mosquito. Symptoms often include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands, or a skin rash. Since then the state has confirmed 2,359 human cases, including 745 hospitalizations and 38 deaths. Other examples of potential breeding grounds are garbage cans, flower pots, pools, and pet dishes.

Wear "long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing" when outside.

Ada County's Mosquito Abatement District has been added to the county's local disaster declaration, officials announced in a news release Tuesday.

Holt says residents can help too by getting rid of any standing water on your property that may be in buckets, a bird bath or even a piece of trash that could collect water.
