Queen's Speech arrives at troubled time for Theresa May
PM May has '10 days to save her job', MPs plotting her ouster: reports
22 June, 2017, 10:16
Theresa May is said to be preparing for a Queen's speech vote on Wednesday and will probably need to have finalised a deal with Northern Island's DUP by then to secure her majority. But the government will double the length of the session to let MPs debate Britain's approach to Brexit without interruption. But Downing Street confirmed that the invitation to Mr Trump stands and said it did not feature because a date is yet to be fixed.
Britain's Conservative Party and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) continued to work Tuesday on a deal to ensure Prime Minister Theresa May has a majority in Westminster, just hours before Queen Elizabeth II is to launch a new session of the parliament.
It means the Government will not put forward a new legislative programme next year.
Defending the decision on the BBC's Sunday Politics, Leadsom reacted to the accusation by political editor Nick Robinson that the decision to extend parliament was extremely unusual and hadn't happened "in other crises", saying: "It's not unusual - it happened in 2005 and 2010... it isn't so much a crisis, but the weight of legislation".
The Queen's Speech was initially planned for Monday but had to be postponed due to the turmoil following the election.
Ahead of today's set-piece event, Mrs May noted how, at the election, over 80 per cent of the electorate backed the two major parties, both of which campaigned on manifestos that said "we should honour the democratic decision of the British people" in the European Union vote.
In an apparent sign of recognition that she must seek a broad consensus for any Brexit deal, Mrs May said getting European Union withdrawal right will mean securing "a deal which delivers the result of last year's referendum and does so in a way that commands maximum public support".
"The election result was not the one I hoped for, but this government will respond with humility".
Historically, the Queen's Speech is seen as a vote of confidence and failure to get it through Parliament is enough to bring down the government.
Opposition parties are reportedly planning to table a series of amendments, including changes to housing legislation following a devastating fire in a local authority-owned tower block earlier this month.
Leadsom said: "We will build the broadest possible consensus for our Brexit plans, and that means giving Parliament the maximum amount of time to scrutinise these bills by holding a two-year session of Parliament".
The scaled-down ceremony is a result of the timing of the snap election.
