The event's official Facebook page announced today 20,000 tickets have been sold for Thursday night's game and more than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity. The crowd chanted "USA!"

Thursday night's Congressional Baseball game was full of heartfelt moments, a day after a gunman opened fire on a GOP practice field in Arlington, Va.

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File). Congressmen gathered at second base, where Scalise was standing when he was wounded.

Played nearly every year since 1909, this year's congressional contest began with a moving tribute to the victims of the shooting, as well as the Capitol Police officers who helped take out the gunman.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago".

Mika also remained hospitalized Saturday after undergoing an additional surgery. Doctors didn't address what organs were damaged.

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game.

In an emotional interview with CNN's Brooke Baldwin, Republican Rep. Rodney Davis and his wife recalled the horror of Wednesday's shooting at a congressional baseball practice. While he's still under sedation, Sava says Scalise has responded to family members. He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

Sava said Friday that there were still hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but that doctors "have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

David Bailey, a Capitol Hill police officer who was part of Mr Scalise's security detail and helped bring down the shooter, was also injured in the incident but had recovered enough to throw the game's ceremonial first pitch.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family. He was said to have been awake on scene; however, underwent shock during his transportation to the trauma center.

"He clearly knows they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said.

James Hodgkinson had a handwritten note on him at the time of the shooting that contained about five names and descriptions, a credible federal law enforcement source confirmed to WTOP's JJ Green.

On a baseball diamond in Washington, D.C., there was a symbolic gathering of Democrats and Republicans that discarded all partisanship and came together as "Team Scalise". Many players, although wearing uniforms of various professional and college baseball teams within their states and districts, wore the purple caps of Louisiana State University in Scalise's honor.
