Trump calls House healthcare bill 'mean' during closed-door meeting with senators ‒ report

President Donald Trump speaks before having lunch with Republican Senators and White House staffers in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington Tuesday Trump calls House healthcare bill 'mean' during closed-door meeting with senators ‒ report

The quandary facing Trump and the Republicans is that Obamacare, with all of its flaws, is vastly more popular than Speaker of the House Paul Ryan's cruel healthcare concoction.

Next, the Senate will come up with their version of the same bill. We fear Republicans' efforts to keep the bill hidden mean that, like the House Republican bill, their legislation will leave millions of American without health insurance while driving up costs and weakening protections for others.

The House of Representatives narrowly approved its version of repeal last month but Senate Republicans have been unable to coalesce around their own version of a bill, with moderates and conservatives pushing in different directions in meetings behind closed doors.

Yet Republicans such as Ms. Capito, Mr. Portman and Dean Heller of Nevada are looking for a more gradual phaseout of generous federal funding that their states used to expand Medicaid for the poor, saying they would like to avoid an abrupt "cliff" in 2020, when the House bill would freeze the expansion.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is hoping to vote on the health care bill before the July 4th recess. They spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal a closed-door conversation.

[Trump] made clear that the Senate needs to pass a bill that Republicans are able to more easily defend and is not viewed as an attack on Americans from low-income households, as the House bill has been portrayed by critics, the sources said....

"As people learned the details of the House bill, it became less and less popular", Ginsburg says.

Their descriptions of Trump's words differed slightly and they said the president did not specify what aspects of the bill he was characterizing.

President Trump met with 15 senators at the White House on Tuesday to push them to finish the job, though he stopped short of asking for a specific deadline. Sounds a lot like complaints from Republicans when a Democrat-controlled Congress passed the Affordable Care Act containing volumes of rules and guidelines nearly no one - including Democrats - bothered to read. "But that's because there are no Democrats who know what's in the GOP health care bill".

In an embarrassing retreat, Ryan had to abruptly cancel a March vote on the House measure after a revolt against it by Republican conservatives and moderates that would have ensured its defeat.

The House bill, H.R. 1628, would cut Medicaid by $834 billion over 10 years, repeal $664 billion of Obamacare's tax increases on the wealthy and the health-care industry, and end requirements that individuals get health insurance and that most employers provide it.

"No, that's not true", McCaskill said, adding that during the drafting of Obamacare, "dozens of Republican amendments were offered and accepted in that hearing process". "Many of you are here because you pledged to cast this vote". Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, said "I don't know that there's going to be another hearing" on the Republican bill to replace the ACA, "but we've invited you to participate", according to the report.

Trump had not publicly criticized the House bill previously. Afterward, third-ranking Republican John Thune of South Dakota said the president "wants us to get moving on it" and urged the GOP senators to work through their differences.
