Tourism is technically banned under the embargo, but under the Obama administration, relaxed regulations allowed Americans to visit Cuba under people-to-people travel. Some were persuaded. Ramon Sanchez, head of the Cuban-American democracy movement, explains his change in attitude. In Miami, then-candidate Trump called for a reversal of Obama's normalization of Cuba policy, saying he would demand religious and political freedom for the Cuban people as well as the release of political prisoners.

President Trump's new measures are designed specifically to restrict money to the Cuban military and intelligence services. "Officially, today, they are rejected".

Trump will travel on Friday to Miami, where he is set to announce a prohibition on "financial transactions" with military-backed tourism conglomerate GAESA, according to a source close to the deliberations.

The Cuban government has made clear it will not be pressured into reforms in exchange for further engagement with the US.

Restoring ties led to spectacular photo opportunities, such as the reopening of the respective embassies in Havana and Washington, but to few concrete advances. U.S. airlines and cruise ships restored service to the communist-run island. The dozen accepted reasons for travel included reasons such as "educational activities" or "support for the Cuban people" and - as Politico reports - there was little to no enforcement of making sure USA travelers actually held true to their stated reasons for travel. Remittances to Cuba won't be cut off.

These changes will affect Cuba's burgeoning tourist industry that has lured Americans who had always been attracted by the island just 90 miles from Florida but impossibly out of reach thanks to long-standing sanctions.

Cuba's 1470-word statement Friday night labeled Trump a hypocrite for calling on Cuba to improve human rights, saying the USA government "is threatening more limits on healthcare that would leave 23 million people without insurance. and marginalizes immigrants and refugees, particular those from Islamic countries".

"You'll be very happy", Trump said in September.

It outlines President Trump's pushback on Obama Administration initiatives, which weakened the longstanding economic US embargo on Cuba. The new president's action is broadly opposed by American business groups.

Commercial flights, which resumed for the first time in 50 years last summer, will still continue between the USA and Cuba.

Ferral Rimer wonders why the US would distance itself from Cuba, when it does business with other nations that have questionable human rights records.

Trump would announce the Cuba policy during a speech in Miami and issues orders that would reverse some of the regulations Obama had introduced in 2014. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) played a "central" role in helping the administration recast the policy, one official said, while other members of Congress were instrumental as well.

Supporters of Trump's changes said they are created to hurt Cuba's communist government economically, and encourage people to rise up against the regime that has been in power since 1959.
