Turkish FM urges peace, dialogue in Gulf crises

Lillian Steele | 19 June, 2017, 01:09

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis and his Qatari counterpart Khalid Al-Attiyah, penned a $12 billion agreement for the purchase of up to 36 F-15 fighter jets.

The deal and the military exercise between the USA and Qatar comes after Trump criticised the Gulf nation for being "a funder of terrorism at a very high level" soon after Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt broke all diplomatic ties with the country earlier this month alleging that Qatar supported terror groups like Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing Doha of sponsoring terrorism.

Qatar's ambassador to the United States posted a picture of the signing ceremony online, writing "Qatar signs LOA for the purchase of the F-15QA fighter jets creating 60,000 new jobs in 42 states across the United States".

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, on a Gulf tour trying to help broker an end to the crisis, defended the deal. Qatar is the richest nation on the planet in per-capital GDP, but a very small nation to be spending $12 billion on warplanes. "America's support for Qatar is deep-rooted and not easily influenced by political changes", said an unnamed Qatari official in Doha, according to the news agency Reuters. Ankara has also sent planeloads of food to Qatar, which had been dependant on imports from Saudi Arabia. Over 11,000 worldwide forces, including United States forces, are stationed on the base used by the global coalition in the fight against terrorism in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.

Qatar remains home to some 10,000 American troops at a major United States military base in the Mideast.

As you know, a number of Arab countries severed diplomatic ties with Qatar.

The deal is going ahead despite the US President's condemnation of Qatar last week, when he also appeared to take partial credit for the blockade. He added that there was no military aspect to steps taken by Arab powers against Qatar.

The Pentagon last week renewed praise of Qatar for hosting the United States airbase and for its "enduring commitment to regional security". More than 100 aircraft operate from there, according to Al Jazeera.

"We are working bring these states together towards a solution which satisfies both their current regional concerns and the global needs and expectations of passengers and shippers", ICAO said.

The move has been backed by nations including Bahrain, the UAE, Egypt and others.
