Charlie Gard's new chance at life?

Court To Rehear Charlie Gard's Case Case of critically-ill baby back in court

Baby Charlie Gard with his parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard. His parents want to bring him overseas for experimental therapy, which they say offers their son a chance of improvement. David Lidington says that the decision on 11-month-old Charlie Gard will be made by judges acting "independent and dispassionately" based on the facts of the complicated case.

A British court has given the parents of terminally ill 11-month-old Charlie Gard a fresh chance to present evidence as to why they should be allowed to take their son to the United States for experimental treatment.

The decision came after an emotionally charged hearing in the wrenching case, during which Gard's mother wept in frustration and his father yelled at a lawyer.

A new hearing is set to begin on Thursday (local time), with parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard given 48 hours to prepare what "new evidence" supporting U.S. treatment.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is arguing that Gard's condition is irreversible, and that further treatment could lead to further suffering.

The hospital requested a review of the justice after the publication of a letter from the Bambino Gesu Hospital in the Vatican, which presented its research and recommended that the Great Ormond Street Hospital "reconsider" its position.

But the judge insists there has to be "new and powerful" evidence to reverse earlier rulings that barred Charlie from travelling overseas for treatment and authorised London's Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to take him off life support.

"If you bring new evidence to me and I consider that evidence changes the situation ..."

The case gained spotlight after President Donald Trump and Pope Francis offered help to the baby.

Gard suffers from a rare disease called mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome which causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage.

Pope Francis last week expressed his support for the baby's parents and said he hoped doctors would allow them to "care for their child until the end".

"I did my job", he said.

Chris Gard said, "Our parental rights have been stripped away, we can't even take our own son away to die, we're denied that, d'you not think we've been put through enough, our final wish".

He said: It seems that if he remains at Great Ormond Street it seems that nearly certainly his life support will be withdrawn and clearly he is likely then to die.

"This treatment has prolonged life in some cases..."

His parents have claimed that they have evidence of treatment in the USA that could save his life, though Francis has given them by 2 p.m. on Wednesday to produce the details, with another hearing scheduled for Thursday.
