That said, he agreed with Setiawan's take: "We can reassure moderate coffee drinkers that they can continue", Guallar said. Meanwhile the USC study suggests people who drink two to three cups a day "reduce the risk of death" from one of the common diseases by 18 percent.

"We found higher coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of death from any cause, and specifically for circulatory diseases, and digestive diseases", said Dr. Marc Gunter of the IARC.

Most previous studies on the effects of coffee on longevity have focused on people of European descent. It showed that coffee consumption was linked with a lower risk of death from diseases like circulatory and digestive diseases.

Compared with non-coffee drinkers, men who drank three or more cups had an 18 per cent reduced risk of death. A quarter of participants drank two to three cups of coffee per day and 7 per cent consumed four or more cups. These findings are consistent with other research that looked at white populations, according to lead author Veronica Wendy Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at USC's Keck School of Medicine.

Ah coffee, that miracle beverage that cures so many of life's ailments and the thing I simply must have before you speak to me. "However, in European populations, where coffee consumption and preparation methods are variable, the relationship was less certain as relatively small studies had previously been conducted", study co-lead author Neil Murphy, from the Section of Nutrition and Metabolism at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, told IBTimes UK.

Regardless of whether the coffee was caffeinated or not, it had the same benefits.

Experts say more research is needed to determine which of the compounds in coffee may be giving a protective health benefit.

One of these studies surveyed over 520,000 people in 10 countries in Europe, thus also making it the largest the study till now on mortality and coffee drinking.

In what has been called the clearest evidence yet of coffee's so-called "elixir effect", researchers in Europe and the U.S. found coffee drinkers had a reduced risk of death.

We're taking this as permission to pour a full-strength coffee nightcap.

Of course, adding sugar to coffee creates more health issues, such as diabetes.

Coffee may have reported health benefits, but it's not necessarily safe for everyone. But if you don't have that sensitivity, the researchers say this proves that 3 to 5 cups a day can be part of a healthy diet.

The studies involved more than 700,000 people and found that the more coffee individuals consumed, the less likely they were to die an early death from a number of diseases including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Women who drank three cups a day had an 8 perent reduced chance of death.

Riboli notes that the Imperial College study found that drinking more coffee was associated with "lower markers of inflammation" and "better markers of liver function".
