Pacino will play Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in college football history who becomes tangled in a sexual abuse scandal involving his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

A photo of Pacino made up as the former Penn State coach has been revealed, and the resemblance is uncanny.

In an official statement about the biopic, HBO says the project is meant to focus on Paterno's questionable character, "challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure regarding the victims".

Levinson and Pacino previously collaborated on HBO's 2010 Jack Kevorkian biopic You Don't Know Jack and 2014's The Humbling. The project is now in production and without an official release date.

See the video below for more on Al Pacino 's role as Joe Paterno. Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience) will play reporter Sara Ganim, who first brought this story to light for The Patriot News as a 23-year-old.

Penn state fired Paterno in 2011 following Sandusky's arrest, ending his 45-year tenure as head coach.

Barry Levinson will direct the movie that is sure to open fresh wounds in the College Station community and beyond, where Paterno supporters are still legion.

HBO released the first image Sunday of its as-yet-untitled film that will chronicle the infamous Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

It's no different with the late Nittany Lions coach.
