The Latest: Germany asks China to let ailing dissident leave
13 July, 2017, 01:32
The Chinese hospital charged with treating Liu Xiaobo has announced that the ailing Nobel laureate's health is now failing, indicating that China's most famous jailed dissident may not have long left to live.
The First Hospital of China Medical University, in the northeastern city of Shenyang, said Liu's family declined to have him put on artificial ventilation, which was necessary "to maintain life".
Mr Liu was arrested in 2008 after co-writing Charter 08, a bold petition that called for the protection of basic human rights and reform of China's one-party Communist system.
The renowned dissident and intellectual was hospitalised amid strong security measures around the beginning of June after he was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer following nearly nine years in prison.
Mr Liu and his family, who are being closely guarded in the hospital, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Two foreign doctors, one German and one American, reported Sunday after visiting Liu that he expressed a desire to leave for the West and said it would be possible to evacuate him safely - but that it needed to happen soon. He was sentenced to 11 years' jail on subversion charges but was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.
Asked about the Germany statement on Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said he did not know anything about the issues it raised, and reiterated that countries should respect China's judicial sovereignty and not interfere in its internal affairs.
In 2010, while in prison, Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "his long and nonviolent struggle for fundamental human rights in China" - prompting an infuriated Beijing to place his wife under house arrest and freeze diplomatic ties with Norway, where the prize victor is chosen.
"The primary thing we need is approval of the Chinese government to let them go and the issuance of passports for them", Genser told The Associated Press. What they care about is not Liu's treatment, but transferring him overseas.
China has previously told diplomats that Liu can not travel because he is too ill to be moved.
The United States repeated calls on Tuesday for Liu to be released and said it was ready to welcome him if he chose to be treated there.
The scene was denounced as propaganda by rights groups while the German embassy said Monday it "seems that security organs are steering the process, not medical experts".
Official newspaper Global Times used one of these videos to argue in an editorial piece that "foreign forces were using the Liu case to meet political ends and that China would not yield to worldwide pressure".
