Image SourceSam Kanizay, a 16-year-old teenager, chose to soak his legs at the Dendy Street Beach after a long football match.

Following the incident, the father went back to the beach to capture the creatures believed to be responsible.

Sam Kanizay was immersed up to the waist on the beach of Brighton in the suburbs of Melbourne on Saturday night, remaining motionless in the water for thirty minutes.

His family said his legs were covered in "tiny marine creatures eating his legs".

They discovered thousands of tiny bites on the teen's legs, nearly as if he had been pricked with a pin repeatedly.

While the most plausible theory is that Sam has inadvertently become a meal for hungry sea lice, also known as marine isopods.

It's not the first time sea lice have attacked a swimmer. "It sort of looked like hundreds of little pin holes, or pin type bites, distributed all over my ankle and the top of my foot".

"Maybe the strong westerly winds pushed them towards the shore and they congregated on the eastern side of the bay where Sam went", he said. Doctors have no real idea could have caused the odd wounds, although one nurse thought that sea lice could be the culprit.

Sam remained in the hospital Monday recovering from the wounding.

'There was a massive pool of blood on the floor (at the hospital).

"I didn't really know what to think of it, it was a bit of a shock".

The video has been shared by a Melbourne father who said that his teenage son was attacked by those carnivores when he went for a dip.

Using a pool net and some raw meat, he collected thousands of what looked like mites, each of them about 2 millimeters long.

Sam's father Jarrod chose to return to the beach the following night armed with a pool net full of meat and managed to captured dozens of tiny bug-like creatures. "We tried washing the blood off, but quickly realized we couldn't stem the bleeding so we took him to Sandringham Hospital". "The crustaceans would have swarmed off that piece of dead fish and onto his leg".

Hospital staff were at a loss to explain what had happened.

"They're parasites of fish, just like a mosquito will bite us for blood".

Mr Kanizay took a video of dozens of the tiny bug-like creatures chomping on the chunks of meat. "I felt what I thought was a tingling sensation, but this wasn't just tingling", said Monday the 16-year-old radio 3AW.
