This debate also finds itself among the details of the Case 2000, an investigation against Mr. Netanyahu into charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

The move has widely been seen as a turning point in the investigations against the prime minister.

One day later, Netanyahu's former chief of staff, Ari Harow, signed a state witness settlement in which he agreed to testify on behalf of the state in the two graft cases.

"They don't want to just take me down, they want to take us all down". Mrs Netanyahu has denied all the allegations against her, but the police recommended indicting her previous year, and the attorney-general is close to doing so, according to a report on Channel 2, the Israeli TV channel.

"Their objective is a governmental coup", Netanyahu said to thousands of supporters of his Likud Party in Tel Aviv. In 2013, Israeli media revealed he had spent more than $2,000 the previous year on ice cream.

Ms Netanyahu has been variously accused of allegedly using money set aside for the prime minister's official residence for furniture and improvements to the pair's private home, paying for her elderly father's care, inflating dinner party numbers to hire private chefs, and pocketing 23,000 shekels (£4,800) in recycling refunds.

"The allegation is the latest in a string of accusations against the Netanyahu family, which many say are nothing more than a witch hunt". Netanyahu, who is not under investigation in the case, has given his full backing to his lawyer.

"Likud members are not corrupt, but Netanyahu is corrupting Israel", she said.

Internal criticism has emerged only from those outside of politics. Limor Livnat, a former Likud Cabinet minister, has condemned the attacks on the police and prosecution and said that Netanyahu should step aside if indicted.

"[Do you remember] how an old man with a new beard, who was once prime minister for a short time [Ehud Barak], and not one of the good ones, said: 'A political tsunami is coming.' What a tsunami!"

Avraham Diskin, a political scientist at Jerusalem's Hebrew University, said there is no immediate threat and the goal of Wednesday's rally was to quash any thoughts of trying to challenge him.

"Netanyahu is tightening the bolts and exerting his authority", he said. "He's conveying that he is still powerful and everyone should keep their knives holstered".

Police are investigating Netanyahu in two cases.

Mr. Adelson is the owner of the free daily newspaper Israel Hayom, generally regarded as pro-Netanyahu and the subject of a debate in the Israeli government of whether or not the paper should be allowed to be distributed for free.

In his 11 years in office, Netanyahu has weathered several scandals and police inquiries.

A third investigation, "File 3000", relates to a possible conflict of interests involving the purchase of German submarines, in which Netanyahu's cousin and personal attorney represented the German firm involved in the deal.

On Monday, Netanyahu posted on his Facebook page an article citing Palestinian sources as saying they expect the probes to topple him.
