David Johnson gets up slowly after hit in red zone

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer throws against the Detroit Lions during the first half of an NFL football game in Detroit Sunday Sept. 10 2017 Report: Cardinals' David Johnson Could Miss 'Half the Season' With Sprained Wrist

After quarterback Stafford threw his first touchdown pass of the year to Arizona Cardinals cornerback Justin Bethel, special-teams mistakes and back-breaking penalties killed Detroit's offensive momentum and put the defense in awful positions.

Theo Riddick and Marvin Jones also had touchdown catches for the Lions, who visit the New York Giants next week on Monday Night Football.

Detroit Lions fans have seen some ugly football, but the first quarter of the Lions' 2017 regular season was brutal even by Detroit standards.

The defense forced four turnovers and rookie wide receiver Kenny Golladay emphatically announced his arrival with a pair of touchdown receptions as the Detroit Lions overcame a sluggish start to beat the Arizona Cardinals in the season opener Sunday, 35-23. The Lions have a restructured offense, and the focus will be their running game. Running back Ameer Abdullah led the team with 30 yards on 15 carries. He's one of eight players selected in the first three rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft who doesn't have a Twitter account.

Rookie LB Jarrad Davis was fast and physical through the preseason picking up a roster spot and could possibly help the Lions with their declining defensive power. That set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to rookie Golladay to give Detroit its first lead of the day, 21-17. When the two teams played in 2015, Fitzgerald had a little under 60 yards and a touchdown.

After forcing yet another punt, Stafford looked to Golladay again, heaving a bomb out of play-action.

Stafford completed 29 of 41 passes for 292 yards and four touchdowns.

Appropriately, it was the defense that put an exclamation point on the victory.
