The 11-year-old boy is thought to have wandered into a prohibited area at popular tourist attraction Solfatara di Pozzuoli where he fainted due to gas fumes before falling into a 10-feet-deep crater, according to The Guardian.

"The moving sands swallowed all three and the gas exhalation would have been lethal", is how Italian news outlet La Repubblica described the tragedy, adding that the hole was probably saturated with carbon dioxide.

"When the boy went into the quicksand, his father tried to help him and fell into the pit".

The couple's second son, seven-year-old Alessio, survived after scrambling back to safety. "We are still trying to understand what happened".

Eyewitnesses reported arriving at the scene to see the young boy crying and asking for help. It was inside a fenced-off area'. "When the two combine, they form an overwhelming cloud of sulfuric acid, which can render a person unconscious within mere moments". The 7-year-old remained in place behind the barrier and wasn't injured. He and staff members tried to calm the boy who repeatedly requested for his parents. "Of course he was very shocked".

The child's grandparents were expected to retrieve their grandson from Pozzuoli, where he was being cared for by social workers and a psychologist, La Repubblica reported.

The episode happened Tuesday at the Solfatara Crater in Pozzuoli, a prominent vacation spot close Naples.

Solfatara is part of the Campi Flegrei volcanic area.

Its name comes from Latin term, Sulpha terra, or "land of sulfur", or "sulfur earth".

Tourists are allowed to walk around the ground-level crater and look at fenced-off bubbling mud pools and fumeroles.

According to the Associated Press, the exact cause of death for all three is still unclear, but recent heavy rains might have contributed to increased openings in the fields' surface.
