India brandishes 'intelligence report' of Rohingyas' militant links

Bangladesh has for decades faced influxes of Rohingya fleeing persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar where the Rohingya are regarded as illegal migrants Rohingyas Have Terror Links With ISIS and LeT, Says Govt's Confidential Report

The Narendra Modi government on Monday told the Supreme Court that the Rohingya Muslims' illegal immigration into India was illegal and their continued stay poses a serious security threat to the nation.

The government said many Rohingyas have managed to avail PAN cards through forged documents.

The lawyer representing the Rohingya said the decision was discriminatory.

"We have asked the law enforcement agencies and the local administration to take measures so that the Rohingya population do not move out of the areas earmarked for them", he said.

As the Myanmar government does not recognise the Rohingyas as its citizens, in general, it will be hard for India to deport them.

Numerous displaced have arrived with horrific tales of killings and rapes by Myanmar's security forces and Buddhist militias.

Kolkata: The Bangladesh government was keeping an eye on the Rohingya refugees and getting them registered to ensure that militants did not enter the country, HT Imam, political adviser to Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, said on Tuesday. It also said the government had intelligence indicating links between Rohingya refugees and Islamic State and other extremist groups.

The Centre said India has not signed any worldwide treaty on refugees and was under no obligation to keep the Rohingyas, lakhs of whom have fled Myanmar over the past few weeks to escape a crackdown by government forces in the neighbouring country.

"We feel helpless and hopeless", said Rohingya youth leader Ali Johar, who came to India in 2012 and lives with his family in a Delhi settlement.

Myanmar claims the community are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship.

Last October, following attacks on border posts in Rakhine's Maungdaw district, security forces launched a five-month crackdown in which, according to Rohingya groups, around 400 people were killed.

"We were told to hand over our demands to a peon, which we did not do", Haque said.

Currently, they stopped issuing visas on arrival to prevent the entry of Muslims from Rakhine State who identify themselves as Rohingyas. Most of the Rohingya fled to Bangladesh, but others have ended up in India, Nepal and Pakistan.
