The location manager of the Netflix series Narcos has been shot and killed while scouting for locations for the fourth series of the show.

Carlos Muñoz Portal's body was found on Monday, along with his bullet-riddled auto, in a remote area in San Bartolo Actopan, which is near the borders of the Hidalgo state.

That area is said to have one of the worst murder rates in all of Mexico.

Narcos, which most recently handled the Colombia's Cali cartel's rise and fall in season 3, was preparing to shift focus on cartels in Mexico.

Variety reports that Netflix issued the following statement.

Mexican columnist Julio Astillero tweeted this photo of Portal. He was a seasoned scout and worked for Stacy Perskie's Mexico City-based production company Redrum.

Portal was a highly respected and sought-after location scout with credits that include the films Sicario and Fast & Furious. Nor confirmation either way had been made public by Netflix at the time of this writing. The infamous Juárez cartel was briefly featured in the most recent season. It's now unclear if Portal's death will affect production or whether the murder will move production back to Columbia.

Worldwide news outlet El Pais was the first to report his death, and indicated that the compact vehicle in which Munoz was discovered was "on an unnamed dirt road in the community of San Bartolo Actopan, in the municipality of Temascalapa".
