Besides Mexico, EL Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama were on alert for the tidal waves.

Terrifying footage has emerged showing the destruction caused by the huge 8.1 magnitude quake which struck off the coast of Chiapas in southern Mexico.

The natural disaster triggered tsunami waves as high as 3.3 feet at the port of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca, according to the U.S. National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning.

Mexico's civil protection agency said it was the strongest quake to hit the capital since a devastating 1985 tremor that flattened swathes of Mexico City and killed thousands.

At least 20 deaths were reported in Mexico's Oaxaca state. 61 people until now have been announced dead and President Enrique Peña Nieto suspects at least 200 people have been injured.

The quake was so strong that it caused buildings to sway violently in Mexico's capital, more than 650 miles away.

Mexico sits atop five tectonic plates, whose movement makes it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

One of the worst hit towns was Juchitán, in Oaxaca, where at least 17 deaths were reported.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, waves measuring more than three metres above tide levels are expected to hit the country's coast. Earlier, the governor of Tabasco, Arturo Nunez, said two children had died in his state.

Chiapas Gov. Manuel Velasco told Foro TV that there have been reports of damage, including hospitals that have lost power and buildings with collapsed roofs, CNN reported. "It's about 70 miles offshore, but it's not an unheard of quake", Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center, told NBC News.

"45 deaths had been reported in Oaxaca, 12 in Chiapas and four in Tabasco" said Nieto and added that they were assessing the damage, which will probably take hours, if not days.

This quake comes in just as Mexico is warned of Hurrican Katia on its eastern coast.
