Two manatees are safe in deeper water after they became stranded in Sarasota, Florida on Sunday.

Some of those stunned and curious residents walked into the vast patches of sand and underwater growth that used to be the bay-a unsafe thing to do, given the water would rush back.

Several people posted photos Sunday of the mammals on Facebook, hoping rescue workers or wildlife officials would respond. But manatees caught on land were lucky those residents wandered out.

However, he said the commission is anxious that the manatees could end up in areas where they naturally wouldn't once the tide comes back, but he doesn't think they will get injured.

No one should try moving the manatees themselves, as they are a state and federally protected species.

He said: "Went out to the bay and saw two objects out where the water receded so we took off our shoes and walked out through the shells to find two beached manatees".

They then tried to call local authorities and animal services to help but received no answer.

"We had to do something about it", Tony Faradini-Campos of Sarasota told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Gordon says it's not uncommon for the manatees to be tidally stranded and that it's better not to move them.

Michael Sechler, who shared images of the beached animals on Facebook, said he noticed them suffering while he and a group of friends were driving near the bay in Manatee County.
