The Amanda Nunes era of women's bantamweight continued at UFC 215 on Saturday.

Shevchenko has been on a warpath since that loss, defeating former champ Holly Holm and top contender Julianna Pena as Nunes racked up wins against Miesha Tate and of course, Ronda.

Neither fighter was able to pull ahead significantly in the third, a testament to the evenly matched nature of the bout, and while Nunes marched forward, Shevchenko fired back counters, leaving the scoring of the round down to what the judges put more stock in. Brazilian brawler Amanda Nunes played a tactical game Saturday night to beat challenger Valentina Shevchenko by split decision and retain her bantamweight title at UFC 215 in Edmonton, Canada.

If the slight was meant as disciplinary action, Nunes was allowed out of the penalty box early.

That leaves Nunes and Shevchenko in the main event, a similar position for them at UFC 213 until Nunes withdrew from the bout hours before it. "I totally disagree [with the decision]".

"And for this takedown to give victory, I don't agree with this".

Nunes established her range and set the pace in the first round, cracking the lead leg of Shevchenko with venomous kicks.

That money will likely keep rolling in if she continues to defend her belt. "I'm still very congested", Nunes said at the official UFC 215 post-fight press conference. She landed a few good punches but I dominated the rounds and, in the last round, I took her down and kept her there to seal the deal. I was looking to stand and trade punches with him but when I felt that I could control his weight, I made a decision to go with that.

"I know the crowd wants to see a knockout. but tonight, this fight was for me, to go five rounds and prove I'm the best".

The card was supposed to feature Demetrious Johnson defending his flyweight title against Ray Borg, but Borg was forced out of the fight after coming down with an illness.

"I think I made the right decision", she said. I decided with my coach that at the end of the round, take her down.

The closeness of the first bout and Shevchenko's strength when the fight ended lent intrigue to a rematch. "I think she won the fourth".

"I know exactly that she feels that she didn't win this fight. It will be the same fight, the same opponent, and it will be the same preparation".

Nunes, nicknamed the Lioness, raised her arms as the decision was announced while numerous fans booed the verdict. She didn't win the fight. Next for me, I want to get back to where I was before my last fight.

Gavin Tucker, who was considered one of the top Canadian prospects in the UFC, lost in one of the most lopsided decisions in UFC history against Rick Glenn.
