Violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar must stop

Myanmar leader cancels plan to attend UN General Assembly session amid Rohingya Crisis Violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar must stop

An estimated 370,000 Rohingya have fled across the border into Bangladesh in recent weeks amid a spate of attacks on their villages.

Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her campaign to bring democracy to the Buddhist-dominated country, serves as foreign minister and is the de facto leader of the government.

Boris Johnson has called on Aung San Suu Kyi to do more to condemn the "gross abuse of the human rights of the Rohinyga population" in Myanmar as hundreds of thousands of Muslims are displaced from the west of the country.

"I yield to no one in my admiration of what she stood for and the way she fought for democracy", said Johnson, the foreign secretary, on Thursday at a joint press conference with U.S. secretary of state Rex Tillerson.

Worldwide pressure on Myanmar heightened this week after United Nations rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said the violence seemed to be a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Tillerson stated that Suu Kyi has found herself in a hard and complex situation and that Myanmar's democracy is facing a defining moment. And this is going to, in many ways, I think, define the direction that Burma will take.

"Violence in Myanmar has created a humanitarian catastrophe".

The number of Rohingya refugees pouring into Bangladesh since August 25 is nearing 400,000, and United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres seems exasperated.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Wednesday called on Myanmar to halt military action and atrocities against the Rohingya in Rakhine state, saying the ongoing violence by security forces against the Muslim minority was "completely unacceptable and catastrophic".

Activists say more than 100 villagers, women and children among them, have been killed by security forces.

The Rohingya, described by the United Nations as among the world's most persecuted peoples, have faced heightened fears of attack since dozens were killed in communal violence in 2012. Since the Rohingya are considered to be illegal Bengali immigrants and were denied recognition as a religion by the government of Myanmar, the dominant group, the Rakhine, rejects the label "Rohingya" and have started to persecute the Rohingya.
