The 64 percent of Americans who told Gallup they support making marijuana legal is the most in the almost 50 years Gallup has asked the question.

Americans' support for marijuana legalization has reached a new high, the latest Gallup poll shows.

More Americans than ever support legalizing marijuana, according to the most recent Gallup poll.

In 1969 when tracking began, 12 percent supported legalizing the drug, according to Gallup.

However, support for legalization among independents actually fell by three percentage points since past year, when 70% indicated they were in favor of legalization.

"In the five years since the first states made marijuana legal for adults, it has become increasingly clear that - unlike prohibition - regulation works", he added.

A majority of Americans have supported the legalization since 2013.

Already, marijuana has been legalized in eight states and Washington, DC. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked lawmakers to undo federal protections for medical marijuana, repeatedly calling it a "dangerous drug". Despite 72 percent of Democrats supporting legalization, Senator Cory Booker's bill to make weed legal nationwide has drawn a grand total of zero co-sponsors. "We do know that legalization results in greater use". While it's true that this increase in support for legalization has not led to the same rapid changes in the law we saw when it came to marriage equality, much of that can be attributed to the differences in how those laws can be changed. That's the most support that Gallup has picked up in 48 years of polling on this question.

Coloradans voted in 2012 to legalize recreational marijuana, meanwhile, opening the door for the country's first state-licensed retail pot shops to open in January 2014.

The sharp shift in Republican voters' views on pot is the most significant finding in the Gallup poll, coming during a time of increased federal skepticism of marijuana legalization efforts.

The Trump administration's Department of Justice (DOJ) is now reviewing a policy from the Obama administration that discouraged federal law enforcement from interfering in state marijuana laws as long as they followed a certain criteria.
