DRC elected into UN Human Rights Council

A UN committee will examine Australia's human rights record as it seeks a Human Rights Council seat A UN committee will examine Australia's human rights record as it seeks a Human Rights Council seat

The General Assembly today elected, by secret ballot, 15 States to serve on the Human Rights Council, the United Nations body responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe.

Haley previously dangled the possibility that the United States could quit the council during a visit to its Geneva headquarters in June, when she lambasted the 47-nation body as a "forum for politics, hypocrisy and evasion" that allows rights abusers to whitewash their images and foes of Israel to criticize the Jewish state unfairly.

Pakistan will serve on the 47-member council from January 2018 through the end of 2020.

We will bring to the Council the same principled, pragmatic and consultative approach that distinguished our term on the UN Security Council in 2013-14.

Newly elected to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council are Afghanistan, Angola, Australia, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, Senegal, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine.

"When you're in that Council, you're putting yourself forward for scrutiny and then that tells you that Nigeria is ready to scrutinise itself in regards to respect for human rights". He said a lot of work needs to be done on providing the human rights.

Ahead of its election to the United Nations body, Australia was criticised in a report over its human rights record in dealing with refugees and Aboriginal peoples.

During a news conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Varma was asked for Lajcak's reaction to member states distributing gifts in order to garner votes in the Human Rights Council elections, and whether there should be value caps on such gifts.

"Pakistan is humbled by and grateful for the overwhelming support it received from the world community", she said. "Pakistan wins by more than two thirds votes", she said.

Asked what will be Pakistan's objectives in the Council, Ambassador Lodhi said: "We will use our membership to protect our core national interests, uphold universal values, be a bridge builder between polarised positions and expose human rights abuses by India in occupied Kashmir".

"Pakistan's election gives the lie to those who claim that Pakistan is isolated".
