Facebook says 126 mln Americans may have seen Russia-linked political posts

USA social media giant Facebook will roll out new measures to increase transparency of political advertisements on its platform.

An expected 126 million Americans, around 33% of the country's populace, gotten Russian-sponsored content on Facebook amid the 2016 battle, as indicated by arranged declaration the organization submitted Monday to the Senate Judiciary Committee and acquired by NBC News.

The testimony starts with an explanation about how Facebook's news feed and advertising operations work, and then goes into detail about how the Internet Research Agency's actions affected its audience.

Facebook also announced recently that its Canadian division would run an "election integrity initiative" to promote authentic dialogue and civic engagement in the run-up to the 2019 Canadian federal election. The company emphasizes work it did to secure its platform before the election, including by taking down 5.8 million fake Facebook accounts in October 2016, the month before the election.

In his testimony, Stretch calls the content of the Russian-bought ads "deeply disturbing", and says it was "seemingly meant to amplify societal divisions and pit groups of people against each other".

Still, the Post noted, that number is relatively small compared with the total number of posts Facebook users see in their news feeds.

Stretch's testimony also discloses that some of the 3,000 ads also appeared on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

C-SPAN will be busy Tuesday (Oct. 31) covering a trio of Hill hearings featuring executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google.

Google later revealed that accounts connected to the Russian government had bought $4,700 worth of search and display ads, and that accounts with Russian internet addresses or using Russian currency purchased another $53,000 worth of ads.

"It is an issue in this is confirm that outside nationals effectively endeavored to affect our race and they managed to achieve 126 million with messages", Karpf said.
