If Catalonia declares independence we will respond

"We have to talk about this", he said.

Around 350,000 people attended, municipal police said, while organisers put turnout at between 930,000 and 950,000.

The referendum on independence called by the Catalan government, deemed illegal by Madrid, saw an overwhelmingly majority vote to split from Spain.

Kofi Annan, in his role as chairman of The Elders, a group of notable public figures formed in 2007 to promote peace, said, "The constitutional crisis that is unfolding in Spain calls for consultation and not confrontation".

According to the Catalan Civil Society (SCC), which organised the "Enough!"

France said it would not recognize Catalonia if the region declared independence.

Many protesters in Barcelona have called on Mr Rajoy and Mr Puigdemont to negotiate and find a solution to what has been widely regarded as Spain's worst political crisis in almost four decades.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy warned anew today that Spain will not be divided by a declaration of independence from Catalonia and said the government is ready to respond to any such attempt. In the El Pais interview, Rajoy said "some mistakes were made", but blamed Catalan authorities for putting "national sovereignty" in danger. "Ideally, we should not have to resort to drastic solutions, but in that case there would have to be rectifications".

Marta Pascal, general coordinator of the pro-independence Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT) Party in the ruling coalition, told BBC on Monday that the declaration would be symbolic.

The referendum was marred by violence with approximately 900 people injured as police attempted to prevent voters from casting their ballots.

Regional polls by the region's survey agencies indicate that more than a third of Catalans are supportive of an independent Catalonia.

As a result, the two leaders have not been in contact for some time.

Claims for independence date back centuries, but have increased in recent years because of the economic crisis affecting the nation. In response to the vote, Spanish riot police shut down polling stations and beat protesters, leaving nearly 900 people injured.

People, many wrapped in Spanish flags, gathered for the largest pro-union showing since the rise of separatist sentiments in Catalonia.

Nicola Sturgeon, SNP leader and first minister, dodged the recognition question on The Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, saying: "It's not for me to decide what is the right future for Catalonia. What they are doing is destroying it". Last week Catalan conducted a banned referendum which was heavily supported by 90% of the vote, but only 43% of the regions 5.3 million voters actually voted.

Puigdemont is due to address the Catalan parliament on Tuesday about the "current political situation", and many expect him to declare the region's independence as a result of the 1 October referendum.
