Clark County Under sheriff, Kevin McMahill, said investigators remain largely in the dark after running down more than 1,000 leads seeking clues to what drove a wealthy retiree with a penchant for gambling to carry out the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

TMZ reports Paddock booked one room at the Blackstone Hotel, 636 S. Michigan Av., for August 1 through August 6.

Before Stephen Paddock chose to attack the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas he may have considered carrying out similar massacres in other cities, including Chicago and Boston, NBC News reports.

Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said Friday at a news conference that examinations of Paddock's politics, finances, any possible radicalization and his social behavior have turned up little information on what led to the attack.

"She said he would lie in bed, just moaning and screaming, "Oh, my God", one of the former Federal Bureau of Investigation officials told NBC News. An estimated 400,000 people, including former First Daughter Malia Obama, attended the four-day music festival in August.

The shooting is the deadliest in modern USA history.

Police had hoped Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, would be able to provide some insight. It has been determined that the attack was "obviously premeditated" and "meticulously planned".

"We certainly know that he distracted the shooter and so lives were saved", David Hickey said, according to Newsweek.

Travel records obtained by ABC News showed Danley uses an Australian passport and traveled to the Philippines on September 15.

Sheriff Lombardo said Paddock fired about 200 rounds of ammunition into the hallway outside his suite, wounding a security guard who had come to investigate.

Police are also trying to determine if Paddock was working alone.

"Paddock rented a room at the Ogden Hotel in downtown Las Vegas".

"His bravery was incredible because he remained with our officers, providing them the key pass to access the door and continued to help them clear rooms until our officers demanded he seek medical attention", said Lombardo.
