Trump seeks immigration overhaul in DACA deal

Trump seeks border wall in exchange for 'Dreamers' deal Trump Demands Money for Border Wall in Exchange for Protecting “Dreamers”

In exchange for protecting hundreds of thousands of younger undocumented immigrants in the USA, the administration said it wants funding for a border wall, a crackdown on Central American children and punishment for "sanctuary cities", the Washington Post reports.

In a joint statement released after the Trump administration sent Congress a set of strict immigration principles, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi ripped the demands as unreasonable and unserious.

If President Donald Trump doesn't make a deal with Democrats to protect the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says he's willing to sue the White House.

Democrats quickly opposed the plan saying it goes against the deal they struck with the President to protect so-called "Dreamers", immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children. "They need a solution, they need a legislative solution, and that's what I hope we can come up with in a bipartisan fashion", said Gardner. The plan also calls for changes to laws to cut the so-called migration chain, as well as funding for building the border wall and the hiring of more deportation agents. A person familiar with the matter has disclosed that these leaders meant to forge a deal with President Trump, a matter that would end up protecting younger immigrants.

In responding to a question about how the Dreamers fit into the United States' future workforce, Trump also called for comprehensive immigration reform.

Trump has given Congress six months to find a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. This proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise, ' they added.

A Democratic aide familiar with the process told TIME on Monday that numerous principles outlined by the White House could face opposition from lawmakers both sides of the aisle.

The documents call for tighter standards for those seeking U.S. asylum, denial of federal grants to "sanctuary cities" that serve as refuges for illegal immigrants, and a requirement that employers use an electronic verification system known as "E-Verify" to keep illegal immigrants from securing jobs.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for his part, urged Democrats to exercise "extreme caution" as they hammered out the details of the agreement, and warned that Trump would put in place a "cyber wall". Some were quick to say though that the hardline demands shouldn't be seen as Trump's views, but rather those of a small part of his administration.

But shortly after the plans were delivered, Democratic lawmakers dismissed Trump's proposals. Many are policies Democrats have explicitly said are off the table.

Trump had previously said he wanted a DACA deal to include significant money for border security and eventual funding for his border wall.
