Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while on a visit to the Kedarnath shrine on Friday, announced several schemes to redevelop its premises that was damaged by floods in 2013.

Vijay Bahuguna who is now a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in Congress when he was the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in 2013. He also spoke about the importance of the environment and the need to protect it. PM Modi also spoke about making Kedarnath an ideal pilgrimage spot and in turning Uttarakhand into an organic state.

Mr Modi said, "They (UPA government) viewed this with a kind of alarm as they thought the Gujarat CM will now reach Kedarnath, and mounted pressure on the then state government not to agree to my request". The then Uttrakhand chief minister and officials agreed and I announced the same to the media. According to reports, nearby areas of the temple were destroyed in 2013 after the Chorabari Glacier lake breached following heavy rainfall that caused flash floods in the river Mandakini.

The PM's visit to the holy site in Uttarakhand today, came on the eve of its closure for the winter. "Modiji you forgot to tell people that the Congress government at the Centre gave a redevelopment package of Rs 6,000 crore for Kedarnath in 2013". The TV flashed it on screens. "Since people from different states had perished, I could not stop myself from rushing here after the disaster", Modi said, after laying foundation for five developmental works around the highest Jyotirling in the country. During the visit, PM Modi laid foundation stone for Kedarpuri Reconstruction Project, the construction of a museum, and the distribution of electricity to over 4 crore families and reconstructing Adi Guru Shankaracharya's tomb.

"I had expressed my desire to carry out reconstruction work at Kedarnath to the then chief minister, who agreed in principle", Mr Modi said. We are building quality infrastructure in Kedarnath.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took the opportunity to slam the Congress for playing politics when the region was devastated by floods in 2013.
