They will join the 50.9 million Americans who plan to travel during the holiday, a gain of 1.6 million, or 3.3 percent, for the most Thanksgiving trekkers in 12 years.

More than 50 million Thanksgiving revelers are expected to hit the road this year, marking the holiday's busiest travel weekend since 2005, according to AAA's annual travel forecast released Thursday.

Just under 4 million USA travelers will fly this year, an increase of almost 5 percent and the largest number since 2007.

In Massachusetts, more than 1.1 million people expect to travel over Thanksgiving, and more than 975,000 of them will go by vehicle, AAA said. The national average is at $2.54 - a full 37 cents higher than previous year, according to AAA. Many Green Bay Packers fans may also be traveling to Pittsburgh, to see the team take on the Steelers. Although Idaho gas prices have been among the highest in the country in recent years, a nine-cent increase over the past month brings the US average to within a dime of Idaho pump prices.

The company also added that according to AAA's Leisure Travel Index, travelers taking to the skies will pay the lowest average in five years for a round-trip flight for the top 40 domestic routes. "Oil prices reached 2-year highs last week, causing the sudden jump at the pump". "A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes, driving up the".

"Gas prices still aren't awful", said Haugh.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 26. "These factors should help fuel consumer spending and generate a strong finish for the travel industry this year".

Air travel is expected to see the biggest year-over-year increase, at 5 per cent, with about 4 million travellers expected to pass through U.S. airports over the holiday period.

The vast majority-nearly 90 percent-of MI holiday travelers will drive this Thanksgiving.

Orlando is the No. 1 Thanksgiving destination, followed by Anaheim, California, New York City, Honolulu and Las Vegas.
