Arab League delivers harsh criticism of Iran, little action

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir Riyadh Israel Ready to Work With Saudis Against Iran

Saudi Arabia urged fellow Arab League nations to find a "non-compromise" solution to deal with "Iran's aggression" and "disregard for worldwide law" during a specially-summoned foreign ministers' meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Cairo, Nov 19 Saudi Arabia warned today that it would not stand idly by in the face of Iranian "aggression", as Bahrain said the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement was "in total control" of Lebanon.

Arab foreign ministers gathered at the League's headquarters in Cairo Sunday for an emergency meeting called by Saudi Arabia.

"The ballistic missile launched on my country's capital reflects the repeated Iranian attacks against the kingdom, which witnessed the launch of 80 Iranian ballistic missiles through its Houthi agent in Yemen, which was exposed to various cities in the Kingdom, and did not care about the Muslims' Qiblah by launching three ballistic missiles in a blatant attack on Islamic sanctity and a provocation to the feelings of Muslims around the world".

"We want to hold everyone responsible", Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa said during the deliberations.

Having accused Tehran of trying to destabilize the region by supplying arms to terrorist groups throughout the Middle East, the IDF chief noted that Israel and Saudi Arabia had never fought each other.

Lebanon, where Hezbollah is a key member of a coalition government, and Iraq, a majority Shiite nation bound by close political and religious ties to Iran, stated their reservations about the harsher parts of the resolution, including one that branded Hezbollah a "terrorist" organization.

The ministers were also due to discuss a pipeline fire in Bahrain on November 10, accusing Iran of responsibility.

"This is something we have just witnessed in the region: Bullying small countries into submission", the foreign minister said, suggesting that Saudi aggression is a new regional threat.

The Lebanese envoy to the Arab League, Antoine Azzam, made carefully weighed comments at the meeting that reflected his country's delicate religious and ethnic balance. The move followed the unexpected resignation of Lebanon's prime minister, Saad Hariri, citing Iranian influence across the region and claiming he feared for his safety.

Riyadh is also involved in an increasingly intractable proxy war in Yemen, where millions have been affected by a Saudi-led blockade, and its affiliated factions have failed to topple President Bashar Assad in Syria.

"I trust the League's council will take on its responsibility and take a decision regarding Iranian violations of Arab security", he said ahead of Sunday's talks.
