Spain mulls int'l arrest warrant for Puigdemont
05 November, 2017, 02:20
Brussels prosecutors said in a statement issued Saturday that their federal Belgian counterparts gave them the warrants for Puigdemont and four of his associates due to links the five politicians from Catalonia have to Brussels. "Everything goes through direct contact between the justice authorities".
"We are prepared to fully cooperate with Belgian justice following the European arrest warrant issued by Spain", Puigdemont wrote in Dutch on his Twitter account.
Mr Puigdemont has said he would be willing to co-operate with the Belgian judiciary but that he has lost confidence in Spanish justice, which he claimed has become politicised.
Also in the interview he said that he was "willing to be a candidate" in the regional elections on December 21 and added that he could campaign from overseas.
On the other side of the political divide over Catalonia, a senior official of a large separatist party, the Republican Left, conditioned her party's participation in the December 21 elections on the release of all the jailed separatists.
Puigdemont didn't elaborate or say where he is.
"(I will) study them and will hand them over to the investigating judge either Saturday, Sunday or even Monday", Van der Sypt told CNN on Friday night. Mr Puigdemont, 54, told Belgium television that he wanted to appear "before the true Justice (of Belgium), not before the Spanish".
The former leader has said that he was not fleeing the Spanish court system but instead was seeking European support for his region's independence bid.
Told of Puigdemont's unity call, the ERC's deputy leader, Marta Rovira, responded simply: "We must win (the elections) and that is what we will do". He had resigned from Mr Puigdemont's Cabinet in protest before the declaration of independence.
The ousted leader reacted to the events at Spain's National Court in Madrid as thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest at the jailings. The Basque Country region has its own separatist movement.
