Emenalo: Leaving Chelsea Difficult But Right Decision

Exclusive: Michael Emenalo quits Chelsea in major blow to Roman Abramovich Conte triumphs as key figure at Chelsea resigns

The 52-year-old Nigerian was then handed the position of technical director in 2011 and he helped persuade ex-Italy and Juventus boss Antonio Conte to become the club's new manager in the summer of 2016.

It was certainly a development no one could've seen coming at this point in time, especially after witnessing Emenalo enthusiastically cheer Andreas Christensen on at Stamford Bridge last evening, as Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0.

Chelsea said in a statement: "Chelsea Football Club today announces that technical director Michael Emenalo has chose to stand down from his role".

Emenalo said it had been a hard decision to make, adding: "I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made".

"I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years, and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made".

This past summer, Chelsea lost out on several transfer targets including Romelu Lukaku. We will now be reviewing our management structure, and Michael will be a part of that process as we look ahead'.

I need an opportunity to get to see my young kids grow and also to step back and reflect on the work that I have done here and the things that we have been able to accomplish together in this great club.

"Michael arrived at Chelsea in 2007 and in 10 years at Stamford Bridge has contributed to a period of unprecedented success for the first team and academy".

The move to bring his 10-year association with the club to an end may be viewed in some quarters as a victory for Conte, but Emenalo said he remained supportive of the Italian who he helped to appoint last year.
