Facebook To Let Users See If They Followed Russian 'Troll Farm' Pages

Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat, called it a "very positive step" and said lawmakers look forward to additional steps by tech companies to improve transparency.

Facebook says it is creating a portal enabling users to learn whether they liked or followed pages or accounts linked to a shadowy Russian company that USA officials accuse of trying to influence last year's presidential election with socially divisive posts.

Lawmakers at congressional hearings this month suggested that Facebook might have an obligation to notify people who accessed deceptive foreign government material.

The tool will initially only be available to US-based users, but other options will be considered at a later point, the spokesperson said.

Facebook, in a statement, said it would let people see which pages or accounts they liked or followed between January 2015 and August 2017 that were affiliated with the Internet Research Agency.

"The most obvious one that is typically the most reliable is location information that is transmitted by the user's browser when they use Facebook", Stretch told the senators. "It's also the most manipulable", he added. The company also disclosed some 4000 ad buys by the group, and said that its post may have been seen by as many as 140 million people. Accounts linked to the Internet Research Agency (IRA) created posts to manipulate voters during the 2016 election and reached more than 150 million people.

"People are much more affected by content shared by their friends, they are more likely to click on it and spend time reading it and considering its merits when a trusted friend shares it on their Facebook page", said Jonathon Morgan, chief executive of New Knowledge, which tracks the spread of misinformation online.

"It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 U.S. election", it said, adding that the tool would be available by the end of the year. Facebook clarified that use of the mechanism would not be public and would not show up in a person's newsfeed. For example, Russians created Facebook events for rallies around pro-Trump policies like anti-immigration.

Facebook will start alerting users who "liked" a page that has been linked to Russian Federation, the company says.
