Gillibrand was asked directly by a reporter for the New York Times about whether he should have stepped down, and she responded by saying, "Yes, I think that is the appropriate response".

Still, it was a remarkable statement from a senator who enthusiastically backed Mrs. Clinton's presidential bid past year but has been deeply involved in legislative efforts to curb sexual abuse and harassment in the military and on college campuses.

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta defended President Bill Clinton on Saturday, telling CNN he "more than paid the price" for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Now, Gillibrand is the highest-profile Democrat who's claimed that if President Clinton were to have his affair today, he'd be pressured into resigning. "The House of Representatives voted for articles of impeachment, (but) the Senate did not".

Clinton was ultimately impeached over the scandal but was acquitted by the Senate and finished his term as president.

Philippe Reines, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, blasted Gillibrand on Twitter over the remarks. "But not enough for you @SenGillibrand?" he wrote.

"But I think things have changed today, and I think under those circumstances, there should be a very different reaction".

"Over 20 [years] you took the Clintons' endorsements, money, and seat", Reines continued, referring to Gillibrand's appointment to Hillary Clinton's vacated Senate seat from NY in 2009 when Clinton left to head the State Department.

On Thursday, Gillibrand announced that she would donate $12,500 she received from Franken's political action committee to Protect Our Defenders, a group working to end rape and sexual assault in the USA armed forces, the Hill reported. They join an avalanche of other liberals who have turned on the Clintons now that the Clintons can no longer help the Democratic Party.

Her comments came during a panel conversation about the countless women who are speaking out and sharing stories about alleged sexual harassments and sexual assaults they have encountered while working in various industries, including politics. She also introduced the "Me Too Congress Act" on Thursday to address yearslong and rampant sexual misconduct on Capitol Hill.

The New York senator made her comments the same day Democratic Senate colleague Al Franken of Minnesota was accused of forcibly kissing and groping a woman traveling with him to perform for troops in Afghanistan in 2006. She also said she will donate money given to her campaign by a Franken-linked PAC to charity.
