For the women, American Shalane Flanagan finished in first place with an unofficial time of 2:26:53, becoming the first American woman to win in 40 years.

The 36-year-old, runner-up in 2010 and sixth at last year's Olympics, won in two hours 26 minutes 53 seconds. Times won't be official until later this month. He and Kipsang embraced just past the finish line to huge cheers.

"This is the moment I have dreamed off since I was a little girl", Flanagan said after the race, tears streaming down her face.

"This is fantastic for me for this is my first victory in (a major) marathon", said Kamworor, who was running his fifth marathon.

Compatriot Manuela Schar, three times a runner-up in NY, beat five-time victor Tatyana McFadden by almost three minutes to win the women's wheelchair race in 1:48.09. Gorman was 42 at the time.

A Marblehead, Massachusetts, native who now calls Portland, Oregon, home, Flanagan will doubtless have to find room in her trophy cabinet for her latest honors.

In the men's race, Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor held off countryman Wilson Kipsang to clock 2:10.53 and win by three seconds. She had blown away the field here a year ago, winning by a margin (3 minutes 34 seconds) not seen in the women's race since 1980.

Manuela Schaer stunned five-times champion Tatyana McFadden in the women's race, defeating the American by nearly three minutes in 1:48.09.

On the men's side, Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor beat out countryman and 2014 victor Wilson Kipsang for his first major marathon victory, with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds.

Switzerland swept the professional wheelchair divisions.
