Irani takes on Congress over 'chaiwalla' meme

Two months later, the BJP won the election by a landslide majority and the Congress' fortunes have been eroding steadily ever since.

Congress party's youth wing's online magazine Yuva Desh tweeted out a meme mocking Narendra Modi as "chaiwala" targetting the Prime Minister over his days when he sold tea. "Aap logon ne dekha vipaksh mere kaise kaise maimai banvata hai?" says Modi. It shows the PM asking Trump and May if they are aware about the various "memes" (with a wrong pronunciation) that have been put out by the opposition against him. Mr PM has been depicted mispronouncing "meme" and being corrected by Trump, with May finally saying " tu chai bech (you sell tea)".

Though the IYC chief Amarinder Singh Raja apologised, he maintained the Twitter handle was handled by volunteers and not by the youth body as such. "Despite political differences with the BJP and having suffered everyday abuse from their leaders, we respect the Prime Minister and all political opponents". "Differences on policy and opinion aside, Congress culture imbibes respect for the PM and all political opponents".

Reacting sharply to the tweet and its deletion official national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "Yuva Desh first posts such a derogatory tweet about the Prime Minister and then deletes it but the damage is done".

It did little to stop the ruling party in castigating the Congress and party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi.

Union IT Minister Ravishankar Prasad tweeted, "The arrogance of the Congress Party and shameful anti-poor stand gets exposed from the official twitter of the Youth Congress that a person born in poverty in the family of a tea vendor can not become the Prime Minister".

The apologies from Congress, was unable to supress the anger of numerous BJP leaders.

Seems Congress has learnt very little lessons from the past. "We are trying to find out who did that tweet as mainly volunteers run that page", said Suraj Hegde, Youth Congress in-charge. "U can delete the Tweet but ur thinking towards the poor stands exposed".
