BREAKING NEWS: Oscar Pistorius' murder sentence is doubled
25 November, 2017, 01:31
Reeva Steenkamp "can now rest in peace", her family said Friday, after a South African high court more than doubled Oscar Pistorius' sentence for her killing.
The State had appealed to the court against the leniency of the initial six-year jail sentence.
The South Africa Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the previous sentence was "shockingly lenient to a point where it has the effect of trivializing this serious offense".
The former Olympic and Paralympic sprinter killed Steenkamp at his home in an upscale Pretoria neighborhood on Valentine's Day 2013 - an act he says was an accident after he mistook her for an intruder.
Prosecutors argued that the six-year term was "shockingly light".
Judge Thokozile Masipa ruled the state failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Pistorius was guilty of premeditated murder, but may still be guilty of culpable homicide - equivalent to the United Kingdom law of manslaughter.
A spokesman for Steenkamp's family said the ruling "verified there was justice", the BBC reported.
The Supreme Court said that Pistorius "displays a lack of remorse, and does not appreciate the gravity of his actions". There is no death penalty in South Africa.
The Organisation Justice for Victims tweeted that 13 years was "still no justice".
Pistorius has to serve at least half of his new sentence before he is considered for parole.
But even though State prosecutors managed to get it upgraded to murder, only one extra year was added to the sentence.
The athlete was originally convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to five years in jail. Investigators nearly immediately presented a different version of events, as neighbors heard a loud quarrel in Pistorius' house and called the police two hours before the tragedy.
Oscar Pistorius sits in the dock during his sentencing hearing at North Gauteng High Court on June 13, 2016 in Pretoria.
