Qualcomm Sues Apple As Their Ongoing Legal Battle Continues

Delores Daniels | 03 November, 2017, 01:05

Qualcomm, which has worked with Apple for a decade, stopped sharing software after Apple filed a federal lawsuit in January accusing Qualcomm of using its market dominance unfairly to block competitors and to charge exorbitant patent royalties, a source said. According to Qualcomm, Apple representatives in July requested "highly confidential" information about how the units work with an unidentified wireless carrier's network.

As Apple is gets ready to hold their Fiscal Q4 Results financial conference, the news of Qualcomm Inc suing Apple Inc again hits the wire.

Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf suggested that the company would likely settle with Apple out of court and it could be a situation "where a solution just appears". Qualcomm are claiming Apple breached their contracted agreement, which was arranged regarding the software necessary for mobile chips to interact with the rest of an Apple handset. Apple and Qualcomm have been in a messy legal dispute since the start of the year.

Qualcomm said its "modem that could be used in the next generation iPhone has already been fully tested and released to Apple". Qualcomm is now the largest manufacturer of chips for mobile devices by far, but that could change in favor of companies like Intel and MediaTek if Apple decides to walk away for good. It widened its suppliers to include Intel for some versions of the iPhone beginning with the 7 model. One of the most recent legal developments is between Qualcomm and Apple, where another lawsuit has surfaced as part of an ongoing fight between the two.

We asked Qualcomm for a statement, but the company declined to comment on the speculation that Apple may stop using its chips.
