Snapchat redesigns mobile app in attempt to split friends from media

New Snapchat Snap CEO Evan Spiegel slams social media – and says Snapchat isn't social media

It puts all messages and Stories from friends to the left of the camera, sorted by who you talk to and view most. It will also include recommended content for the user.

By keeping friend-based communication separate from content created by professionals in the feed, Snap is trying to avoid what it sees as a pitfall of continually requiring users to add more friends to see more content. A small percentage of users worldwide on iOS and Android will start getting the new Snapchat on Friday, earlier than expected, and it should be rolled out to everyone within a few weeks. Once the update rolls out, your friends and the content that brands share will be separated into two completely separate tabs. "But today we're making it easier to find the people you want to express yourself with".

Snap already confirmed that it would be redesigning the Snapchat app so to make it easier to use, addressing a longstanding complaint for the social ephemeral messaging app. Apart from lagging user growth-daily users grew just 2.9 percent in the third quarter, the slowest rate since the company began reporting it-Snapchat also faces looming competition from Facebook and Instagram, both of which recently introduced their own version of stories.

As a byproduct of splitting up the friends list and the content from publishers, creators and the community, the look of the app has changed as well. "Snap continues moving in the right direction by leaning in on advertising products that give brands a clear picture of ad performance and will ultimately unlock more marketing budgets as performance continues to improve". So much so that Facebook's Instagram shifted its own philosophy on user sharing 18 months ago to mimic (some say copy) Snap's low-pressure philosophy.

Now, when you finish watching one Story, Snap will show a brief interstitial screen with the name and a preview of the next friend's Story. In addition to separating people and brands, it's creating a true algorithmic feed on the friends page for the first time. "While blurring the lines between professional content creators and your friends has been an interesting internet experiment, it has also produced some odd side-effects (like fake news) and made us feel like we have to perform for our friends rather than just express ourselves". Upon opening the new Snapchat app, you'll be met with the familiar screen of your camera's viewfinder.

Previously, content from friends mingled and competed with professional content in one pane on the right.

"This will continue to set us apart from other platforms", Snapchat's announcement said, "and help us ensure that each user sees multiple perspectives from a wide variety of publishers and creators, and continue to protect our community from filter bubbles and fake news".

"Snap is about chatting with your friends, about conversations that happen every day and all day", he said.

Or maybe it will as users become inundated and overwhelmed by a social media environment - primarily on Facebook, but also on Twitter - that has become bloated, noisy, and at times, toxic.
