Production for the new Roadster sports vehicle, a likely Ferrari rival, will start in 2020.
On its website, Tesla said that its Roadster production auto, the newest version of its original sports vehicle, can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds. Tesla says the new Roadster will have 620 miles of range and a top speed of 250 mph (402 kph).
With these heavy-hitting clients standing in line for their Teslas, it's no wonder that the future of the electricsemi truck market is looking bright. The 500-mile version will be able to do round-trip runs on the vast majority of US freight routes, which are 250 miles or less, Musk said. There's also a version with a 300-mile range.
Tesla's truck can also follow other Semis autonomously to form a convoy of several vehicles - a feature that Musk outlined in his masterplan for the company past year.
The Tesla Semi checks a lot of boxes in terms of addressing bottom line considerations, offering 500 miles of range to avoid too much compromise vs. diesel truck travel capability, and providing a way for a company to decrease its net Carbon dioxide emissions without having to undertake expensive endeavors like sponsoring the construction of renewable power plants.
Tesla says production for the new Semi should commence by 2019 in the US.
Musk said that the age of traditional gas-guzzling cars was over. To reserve the base $200k Roadster, you'll need to make a $50,000 reservation now.
Without a trailer, the Tesla Semi goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in five seconds, compared to 15 seconds in a comparable diesel truck, Tesla said, and does zero to 60 miles per hour in 20 seconds with a full 80,000-pound load. Tesla estimates a two-year payback for the added cost of the truck, meaning more than $200,000 in saved fuel.
Musk - who has vowed to take humans to Mars in the next few years - has become famous for his futuristic visions, which also include a supersonic "Hyperloop" train under Los Angeles that would travel at over 200mph. Inside the truck's cabin - tall enough for a driver to stand upright - there are two large touchscreen interfaces.
The auto will be available in 2020 with a starting price of $200,000, which The Verge notes might be a bargain as the only now comparable cars on the market start at around $1 million. Elon Musk recently described it as "production hell".
