Mueller Revelations Put Sessions in Awkward Political Position
05 November, 2017, 02:18
Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump's campaign, said Friday that he mentioned a planned trip to Russian Federation to "a few people" on the campaign.
Sessions's participation in the gathering was detailed in court documents released Monday by special counsel Robert Mueller III. Jeff Sessions and "a few people" on the Trump campaign.
In the Senate Judiciary Committee's January confirmation hearings for Sessions, Sen.
Senate Republicans have not rushed to Sessions's defense but were less ruffled about his participation in the Papadopoulos meeting.
In a letter to Sessions on Thursday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.
But the chairman of Trump's national security team, then Alabama senator and now attorney general Jeff Sessions, shut down the idea of a Putin meeting at the March 31, 2016, gathering, according to a person in the room. "He said Sessions did not react or comment one way or the other", Conaway told CNN.
Sessions said, "I did not, and I'm not aware of anyone else that did". The document says when Papadopoulos introduced himself to the group he mentioned having connections that could help the campaign arrange a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"President Trump's pressuring of the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation to pursue cases against his adversaries and calling for punishment before trials take place are totally inappropriate and not only undermine our justice system but erode the American people's confidence in our institutions", Republican Senator Bob Corker, who has frequently sparred with Trump, said in a statement.
It's possible Papadopoulos may have been at Trump events that Sessions also attended, including a dinner at the Capitol Hill Club with some members of the foreign policy committee during the summer of 2016, the person said.
At the time of that article, a spokeswoman for Sessions declined to comment. Sessions didn't respond and moved on to the next person waiting to shake his hand, this source said. The email went to "several members of the Campaign's foreign policy team", prosecutors alleged.
Gordon said that he did not fault Sessions for not recalling things that Papadopoulos said in private settings, noting that thousands of people approached the campaign, "including many, many true volunteers".
In previous interviews, Page had denied meeting with any Russian government officials during the July 2016 trip, which included visiting Moscow's New Economic School, saying he met with "mostly scholars". At least two Democratic members of the Senate judiciary committee, Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate whether Sessions committed perjury during his confirmation hearings.
In his traditional Friday appearance on Shepard Smith Reporting, Wallace noted that a new Attorney General might be inclined to get involved in the Russian Federation probe, which Sessions has recused himself from.
Just last month, Sen.
The revelations that Sessions may have made false statements under oath riled many top Democrats, especially Franken.
Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) demanded that Sessions clarify his past statements and Sen. "There were questions that elicited exactly the kind of information that the Papadopoulos plea agreement made".
"Let's remember that this is about Russian interference in our election and that is at the very heart of our system of democracy and we're trying to find out whether the Trump campaign cooperated", Franken said. Trump denies any collusion with Russian Federation and Moscow denies interfering in the 2016 US election.
