Combining Volvo's cars with Uber's self-driving system builds on their almost three-year relationship and comes as Uber's autonomous driving unit has been hit by a lawsuit over trade secrets and the departure of top talent.

Swedish automaker Volvo announced Monday it will sell thousands of driverless vehicles to ride-share giant Uber, for what will be the start of the company's autonomous fleet.

Uber plans to buy up to 24,000 self-driving cars from Volvo, marking the transition of the USA firm from an app used to summon a taxi to the owner and operator of a fleet of cars. It would be the first of its kind.

This latest move is a result of engineers from both companies developing the self-driving XC90 models that will be supplied to Uber.

The new XC90s that Uber is sourcing from Volvo will be more advanced in their self-driving abilities compared to the existing test cars.

Uber's initiative to purchase 24,000 speeds up the process to replace human drivers.

At present, tests are limited to Tempe, Arizona and Pittsburgh.

"The base vehicles incorporate all necessary safety, redundancy, and core autonomous driving technologies that are required for Uber to add its own self-driving technology", Samuelsson added.

Uber has just taken another big step from a ride-sharing service to a transportation provider.

As the deal is non-exclusive, Uber reserves the right to strike deals with other auto makers.

Waymo, the Google self-driving vehicle spinoff, recently announced that some of its self-driving minivans are already running around Phoenix without a human inside; within months, the company is planning on using those fully self-driving cars to launch a ride-hailing service in the city.

"This new agreement puts us on a path towards mass-produced self-driving vehicles at scale".

"The issue is that we don't have any legislation in any city of the world that would remotely allow this sort of thing to happen at the moment", said Paul Newton, director at the consultancy IHS Automotive, about the idea of a totally driverless taxi service.
