"Of the two killed terrorists one is a foreign terrorist and the other a local of Jaish militant outfit, " Deputy inspector General of Police, South Kashmir, S P Pani said.

"We were fired upon from outside the cordon by militants who were trying to break the cordon in order to aid the militant in fleeing from the spot". Confirming this a police spokesman said that another militant fled from the encounter site.

The militants opened fire on the security forces following which an encounter ensued that led to the killing of two terrorists. They strongly condemned the firing of pellets and teargas shell on peaceful protesters, which resulted in the killing of a woman and injuring of many people in the district.

The gunfight started on Monday evening after the armed forces launched an operation in Batmuran village of the district. The local militant Tanveer had joined the militant ranks in 2015 and was a B category militant, he added.

The puppet authorities snapped the mobile internet services in Shopian and suspended train service in the Kashmir Valley.

Multiple funerals were held and two militants and the woman were later buried at local graveyard. "The cordon was strengthened and the civilians of nearby area were evacuated", a police spokesperson said.

Initial investigation showed the security personnel - who had had laid an ambush in following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in the area - had fired at Asif Iqbal, mistaking him for a terrorist.

Shortly after the 44 Rashtriya Rifles of the Indian Army, CRPF and SOG of Jammu Kashmir Police cordoned off the area, locals hit the roads and clashed with them to disrupt the operation against the militants.
