American Airlines resolves pilot shortage for holiday flights

American Airlines pilots agree to fly holiday flights after scheduling glitch What to Do If You've Booked a Flight on American Airlines

Earlier this week, the Allied Pilots Association said that more than 15,000 American flights from december 17 to 31 could be without pilots because the glitch allowed too many of them to schedule vacation during that period. American was able to reach a deal with its pilots' union which represents the airline's over 15,000 active pilots.

The airline further stated that they employ a large number of reserve pilots in December, many of whom will be filling in for "trips that are now uncovered". Shares of American Airlines Group Inc. trade on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol AAL.

The union, which represents some 15,000 pilots at the largest US carrier, had filed a grievance, saying the solution American had put in place violated pilots' contracts because of how it restricted overtime pay. Both the carrier and the pilots' association have not disclosed the details of the settlement. The agreement addresses union concerns about the company's plan to pay 1.5 times normal hourly rates to pilots willing to pick up flights in need of crews, according to a statement on the union website.

"We are pleased to report that together, American and the Allied Pilots Association have put that worry to rest to make sure our flights will operate as scheduled", the airline said in a statement.

On Thursday, the airline said it hoped to staff every flight by turning to reserve pilots and offering extra pay to other pilots who were approved to take time off during the busy holiday period.
